MODA DO ENTRUDO portrays places where we are all too eager to forget our suffering. Yet the viewers always remain in the role of observers. We see these places only from the outside.
The work is inspired by Zeca Afonso’s song “Moda do Entrudo,” which is based on a traditional folk song from the Beira Baixa region of Portugal. Passed down through oral tradition, this song originates from a distant past. Its themes, however, remain strikingly relevant today. It addresses ideas of escapism, the desire to flee reality, and the feeling of not belonging.
We are allowed to look, but not to enter. In a sense, we exist in a parallel world; this state of in-betweenness lies at the heart of the work.
The photographed places function as projection surfaces for collective desires for relief, release, and dissolution. Despite their promise, they remain out of reach. The camera’s distance reinforces this feeling: intimacy is suggested, yet belonging is denied.
